Research and education on Industrial Heritage of Rijeka

Volunteering

Volunteering means offering one’s personal time, effort, knowledge and skills for the purpose of providing services or activities for the wellbeing of another person or for communal benefit. The project involves volunteers of the third age who can testify to Rijeka’s past and provide material for research related primarily to Galeb, which also opens the possibility of their further engagement dedicated to the history of the city and its industrial heritage. It our intention to use the knowledge and efforts of individuals who are interested in themes regarding Galeb and Sugar Refinery. This way the entire community could be energized to participate in current changes, utilize existing knowledge and experience – recollections of the facilities and Rijeka as it used to be – in order to help the younger generations understand better the complexities of historical circumstances.

The student population is involved in volunteering through the organizing of workshops and preparing of educational material suited to primary and secondary schools. Even wider engagenment is made possible through activities of newly founded Volunteers Network of the University of Rijeka. Students volunteers thus become educated in the history and culture of Rijeka, as well as its technical and industrial heritage, and can also obtain practical skills in organizing educational events and creating educational material.
