Research
Research and education activities relating to industrial heritage of Rijeka provide a scientific basis for further study. Industrial archaeology is a multidisciplinary science requiring collaboration among various fields of expertise, disciplines and technologies in order to cover the wide framework of such heritage and to provide for its adequate interpretation and presentation to the public.
The Centre for Industrial Heritage will conduct a systematic research of industrial heritage of Rijeka, particularly its movable and intangible heritage, in order to create a full picture of Rijeka’s industrial past. Consequently, it will provide a basis for initiating various ways of interpretation, simultaneously to conducting research of methods of educating general public in the context of tourist exploitation of the heritage. The goals of the research will serve as a starting point towards the development of industrial heritage as a destination of cultural tourism.
The research and science centre aims to promote the awareness of the importance of industrial, especially technical and inangible heritage that has been neglected in comparison with architectural heritage.
Research and scientific activities are the basis for all other work, indispensable for conducting project tasks within the University constituent. The Centre for Industrial Heritage will monitor the restoration of Galeb ship – as support to research conducted by the Museum of the City of Rijeka, it will perform a systematic study of documentation and archive sources regarding Galeb. The research will give a significant contribution to the future study of technical and other heritage of the city.
A special segment of the research refers to ways of interpretation and presentation of the heritage. Throughout the project’s duration, the Centre will organise seminars, inviting experts in the field of heritage presentation, cultural tourism and heritage management, with particular emphasis on the topics of presenting the monuments of Rijeka’s industrial heritage: Galeb and the Sugar Refinery Palace.
